Ellen on her 90th birthday at Southbank.
Thema (or Ellen as she preferred) was born on 25 October, 1915 and she was a daughter of Ernest Edwin Coates and Eleanor Georgina Bertha May King.
Ellen was a nurse when she married James Victor Hanscomb. Her husband's father was James Benjamin Albert Hanscomb and his mother was Amelia Cowcher. Ben joined the Australian Army and lost his life at Pozieres, Somme, France on 5th August 1916 leaving eight or nine children and a wife in Arthur Street Dalby. The local council rallied and provided a block of land for the family.

Private J. B. A. Hanscomb, of Dalby
has been reported missing since
August 5. Private Hanscomb
is a married man with eight children,
and his family resides in town.
He was a brother-in law to Private
H. J Porter, who was killed in
action some months ago.
