The Harriet Jones Story
The story of Harriett Jones is incomplete. This is what we have so far.
Birth
Harriett Jones was born about 1845 at Peel River, Tamworth. I have not been able to find a registration of the birth nor do I know the parents names. One of her parents was an Australian Aboriginal and the other 'White'.
Marriage
On 11th June, 1863 at the age of 17, Harriet Jones married Thomas Henry King 27 from Amoy China in this small Church in Wellingrove NSW near where the town of Glen Innis is situated these days.
The marriage was celebrated by Archibald Cameron.
Wellingrove Church
The Reverend Archibald Cameron was the first minister of religion to come to the Glen Innes district and he settled in the Wellingrove district in 1854 and died in the Glen Innes district in 1905. The Cameron Memorial Church in Glen Innes was built in 1920 to honor his name.
Children
The first born to Thomas Henry King and Harriett Jones was Ellen Jane King. Ellen was born on Strathbogie Station at Vegetable Creek, Emmaville in the District of Wellingrove NSW on December 18 1865 (Reg No. 15928/1866). Emmaville is about 39 km north of Glen Innes. On the birth certificate of Ellen Jane King it states that Thomas was born Amoy China.
Ellen Jane's brother,Thomas Henry King Jnr., was born at Strathbogie Station on 25 February 1868 and George King was born 13 April 1870. On January 6 1870 Thomas Henry King Jnr. Died on Strathbogie Station aged one year and ten months from Croup and was buried by the Superintendent of Strathbogie Station, Mr. Joshua Charles Gross, on Strathbogie Station on January 7 and witnessed by the son of Hugh Gordon, George Hollingsworth Gordon, and the death was registered at Glen Innes on March 4 1870.
Death certificate of Thomas Henry King Jnr.
Walkabout
It appears that sometime after the death of her son, Thomas Henry, and the birth of George in 1870 Harriett seems to have taken up with Hugh Kennedy at Walgett NSW.
Hugh Kennedy was born Goulburn in 1945 and his parents were Hugh Kennedy and Elizabeth Ann Bowler.
